No Puedo, I'm Sorry
Director: Aaron Munoz
Scenic Designer: Ciera Keller
No Puedo, I'm Sorry is a short play that shows the story of Olivia and Nathan. Olivia is a Cuban American in her mid-20s that is passionate about her culture and about Miami. Nathan is a music major college student who just moved down from Illinois. Throughout the play these two connect through music and grow a relationship. When reading this play the question is asked: What do people have to give up when trying to connect? I was one of the concept scenic designers for this play. My role was to create a design to be displayed during the play reading.
Approaching the Design
While reading the script for No Puedo, I'm Sorry I thought about two big questions: what do we give up finding a connection, and what happens when we don't connect? While designing this set I though a lot about the two characters, Olivia and Nathan, and their personalities. How can I show their individuality in the set while also uplifting the ideas of connection?
